Poker hand rankings
Whether you play poker online or offline, the basics of the game are consistent and the goal is always the same; the winner is the player with the best hand, or combination, of five cards. Hand rankings, which remain the same in both offline and online poker, from the worst possible hand to the best possible hand of five cards that a player may hold, are as follows:
- High card: a hand contains no pairs, no straight, and no flush.
- One pair: a hand contains a pair of cards, and, if two players have pairs, the stronger hand is the one with the highest pair. If two players hold the same pair, the winner is the player with the highest non-pair card.
- Two pair: a hand with two pairs. In the case of a tie (two players with two pair), player with the highest pair wins.
- Three of a kind: also known as “trips,” or “a set,” three of kind ties are determined in favour of the player with the highest three card set.
- Straight: hand contains five consecutively numbered cards, which do NOT have to be of the same suit.
- Flush: hand contains five cards of the same suit, which do NOT have to be consecutive. When two players have a flush, the flush with the highest card wins.
- Full house: a hand contains three of kind and a pair.
- Four of a kind
- Straight flush
